Farmers typically see good profits during dry seasons. In 2024, however, rain was abundant, leading to an oversupply of crops. As a result, food prices dropped significantly.
This January, cabbages and tomatoes are expected to be profitable for farmers. In the last months of 2024, the prices for tomatoes and cabbages fell below Ksh 5 per kilo, much to the delight of consumers.
One farmer who had one acre of tomatoes had to sell off his first 20 crates of grade-A tomatoes due to poor market prices.

As the dry season approaches, the prices for tomatoes and cabbage are rising rapidly. Currently, the farm gate price for cabbages is Ksh 30 per head, and it is expected to rise to Ksh 50 or more until the next rains.
This trend may apply to other vegetables as well. Normally, selling cabbages for above Ksh 30 is considered a good profit for farmers.

The price of a crate of grade A tomatoes is also increasing quickly, with the current farm gate price at Ksh 2,500 in most regions. This is just the beginning; it is projected to rise to around Ksh 3,000 per crate in February before eventually falling.

However, farmers should not use this information as a reason to plant now. The main factors at play are high supply when prices are low.
Those who planted when many farmers were discarding cabbages and tomatoes are the ones currently enjoying profits. This situation serves as evidence for the planting strategy when other farmers experience losses.
