Profitability in cabbage farming depends on cabbage size, weight and quantity. A good-sized cabbage weighs above 5kg. Cabbage needs plenty of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium at different growth stages. Apply decomposed farmyard manure as well on transplanting.
Why do you apply manure?
Manure use is the most important act in crop farming. Manure helps in water retention, has plenty of nitrogen and phosphorus that fastens root development and leaves growth. In short, it determines the yield.
Pig, Chicken, sheep, goat and cow manure are the best. Apply decomposed manure at least 2kgs per planting hole for better results. Cover manure with the soil and transplant your seedlings.
The Best Fertilizers for cabbages
Di-ammonium Phosphate D.A. P, N.P. K and C.A.N; are the best fertilizers for big Cabbages. Top-dress D.A.P, N.P.K 23.23.0 and C.A.N at the 14th ,28thand 45th day respectively.
On the 14th day from transplanting, the cabbage seedlings have developed root hairs that can absorb nitrogen and phosphorus ions. This hastens the cabbage growth and utilization of D.A.P fertilizer before leaching. Apply 100kgs per acre at the base of the plant.
On the 28th day from transplanting, applying 100 kgs of N.P.K 23.23.0 boosts root growth and leaves enlargement. This is what determines the size of the cabbage to be harvested. The application should be at the base of the plant on wet soil.

On the 45th day from transplanting, the cabbages begin folding. To enhance its compactness, top-dress with 100kgs of C.A.N. The 26% calcium in C.A.N boosts the maturity, compactness and quality of the cabbage to be harvested.
Farmers can also enhance growth by applying high-nitrogen foliar fertilizers such as Easygro Vegetative in the first month. This is followed by the application of Wuxal Macromix in the second month.
Finally, avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers like UREA, D.A.P and N.P.K 23.23.0 in the last month. Its application in the last month slows the folding of the cabbages’ leaves and reduces compactness despite its ability to boost leaf growth.
