Hand Milking a cow
As a dedicated dairy farmer, stop suffering from low milk production due to poor-quality dairy meal when you can create your own high-yield dairy meal at home.
This homemade dairy meal is both cost-effective and of guaranteed quality, providing a significant advantage to farmers, especially at a time when feed quality is declining and prices are rising.
To enhance milk production, your formulation should be rich in protein and provide a balanced energy supply, along with essential mineral salts.
Readily available protein sources include sunflower seed cake, cotton seed cake, soybeans, milled omena, and canola. While maize germ, wheat pollard, and wheat bran have lower protein levels, they are excellent sources of energy.

To provide key macronutrients essential for sustainable milk production, include dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and high-phosphorus mineral salt in your formulation.
Here is a simple, high-quality dairy meal formulation for 100 kg:
- Maize germ: 30 kg
- Wheat pollard: 10 kg
- Wheat bran: 10 kg
- Sunflower seed cake: 15 kg
- Cottonseed cake: 5 kg
- Soybeans: 10 kg
- Milled omena: 12 kg
- High-phosphorus mineral salt (Unga Maziwa): 5 kg
- DCP: 2 kg
- Toxin binder: 1 kg
The amount of feed provided per day also influences daily milk production. Feed 2 kg of this high-quality dairy meal to cows producing less than 5 litres of milk per day. For every additional 3 litres of milk produced, add another 1 kg of this high-yield dairy meal.

For example, feed 3 kg to cows producing 5ā8 litres and 4 kg to those producing 9ā12 litres. Note that cows more than 7 months into their gestation may not exhibit a significant increase in milk production. This feed formulation is particularly effective for cows in their first lactation stage.
Introduce these feeds gradually, starting with 1 kg, and increase the amount as production rises.
