Phosphorus is a key component in maize establishment as it helps in early crop development, reducing grain loss and hence improving yield.
Causes of phosphorus deficiency in maize
There are several factors that cause low phosphorus in plants. Soils with the low organic matter have low phosphorus reserves. Very alkaline or acidic soils such as clay and sandy soils have also low phosphorus.
Soils in cold or wet conditions have low phosphorus which explains the slow crop growth rate in cold regions. Poor crop roots development system inhibits the uptake of key nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. Read Also: Fertilizer application programme for maize farming
Symptoms of phosphorus deficiency in maize
Leaf blades are dark green with margins and veins showing a dull-purple tint which may spread over the whole leaf blade. This is mostly visible in the young stages. This often leads to dwarfing of the crops. Cob size is also highly reduced.
How to control phosphorus deficiency in maize
Plant with organic manure. Then top-dress with phosphorus-rich fertilizers such as DAP and NPK 23.23.0 at the 4-8 leaf stage. Application rates depend on the soil deficiency level and crop stage.
