Tomatoes are a basic complement for most foods for Kenyan which has led to increased demand and therefore more need for supply .this has attracted a lot of farmers into it with a continuous increase in acreage to meet the demand which has destabilized the prices. In this article, we are taking a look at market prices and changes for the year 2020 using the average retail prices collected by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). Unfortunately, farmworx didn’t manage to get prices for January and April.

Except in March when the prices rose high in 2020 compared to 2019, the other months experienced a drop in prices. Prices of per kilo of tomatoes traded as follows in February, March, May, June, July and August; Ksh 128.39, Ksh 120.60, Ksh 115.89,ksh101.79, Ksh 96.91 and Ksh 84.60 in the order respectively. A continuous general decline of -6.06%,-12.16%,-5.50 and -12.05% for March, June, July and August respectively

Price changes

June, July and August 2020 prices represented a decline compared to prices in a similar period in 2019 of;-1.08%,-7.22% and -13.05% respectively except in march where there was an increase of 24.46%. These declines are associated with locust infestation and COVID-19 pandemic
