Best cabbage varieties to grow in Kenya,2022


Cabbage farming has grown due to the high demand caused by the ever changing eating habits.These demand has led to increase in farm gate prices.However consumers are very skeptical on quality ,that is,the color of the cabbage,fibre content, post harvest shelf life.

These combined with the manipulative marketing of agro- seed companies has made many farmers more confused on the right cabbage variety to farm.From our farming experience here are the top five cabbage varieties you can farm in Kenya .They do well in Kenya and are widely accepted in the market.Do you agree or disagree,leave a comment below.All the varieties are white in color.

1. Kiboko F1

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Features

• Kiboko F1 is a compact round head cabbage.
• Weighs between 6-8kgs.
• It has a bluish waxy leaves with good wrappers.
• Matures in 80-90days.
• Kiboko F1 exhibits good tolerance to Black rot (Xanthomonas), splitting and keeps long after harvesting.
• Number of cabbages expected per acre: spacing (60*45cm)=11, 250 cabbages.
• Kiboko F1 has a yield potential of 45-69tonnes/ acre.

2. Triperio F1

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Features

• TiperioF1 is Uniform, bigger head size cabbage with excellent head coverage that guarantees freshness to the market.
• Weighs between 4-6 kgs.
• Triperio is a blue-green cabbage with a compact large head with round shape.
• Matures in 80-90days.
• Has a strong stem elevation above ground with very high uniformity in the field
• Number of cabbages expected per acre: spacing (60*60cm)=10,500 cabbages.
• Triperio F1 has a yield potential of 55-80 tonnes/ acre.

5. Star 3316

• STAR 3316 has very firm round to semi-globe shaped heads with an average head size (without frame leaves) of between 3 – 5 kg with an excellent flavour
